The new iXpand Flash Drive by SanDisk is smaller and sleeker than ever, making it easier for you to free up your phone while preserving the integrity of your mobile lifestyle. Like the previous generation of the iXpand Flash Drive, storage options range from 16GB to 128GB. The size of the drive, however, has decreased significantly, making the new model approximately half the previous size.

While the new iXpand Flash Drive features the familiar Lightning Connector, it’s also now outfitted with USB 3.0 capabilities. Its associated app, the iXpand Drive, has also been updated with new features. Today we’ll take a look at five tips for using the new iXpand Flash Drive and the iXpand Drive app.

1. Turn on Auto Backup

One of the great features of the SanDisk iXpand Drive app is its Auto Backup feature. Simply plug the Lightning Cable into your phone and the app syncs your device’s contents onto the drive. If anything should go wrong with your phone, you can easily restore its contents using the app. This is great for travelers and busy professionals who may not have the chance to back up their phones with their computers. With the iXpand Flash Drive, your phone’s data is protected should your device get damaged, and your backup is always easily accessible.

2. Shoot videos and photos and save directly to the drive

Perhaps the worst thing that can happen while shooting a video is hitting your device’s memory wall. With the iXpand Drive app, you can shoot and save videos and photos directly onto the iXpand Flash Drive, bypassing your phone’s memory limitations and ensuring your dramatic capture isn’t cut short. Playback is simple: just click on “view files” to see and stream all your contents.

3. Check the compatibility of your media files

Before you rush out the door for the airport with your flash drive full of files, ensure that they are compatible with playback. While the iXpand Drive app works with most popular encodings, formats such as DTS or AC3 are not supported. This won’t be an issue for most users, as the iXpand supports major encoding formats for videos (WMV, AVI, MKV, MP4, MOV, FLV, MPG, RMVB, M4V, TS) and music (MP3, AIF, WAV, AIFF, M4A, WMA, AAC, OGG, FLAC). Additionally, DRM-protected content cannot be streamed (so stay within the confines of the law, friends). If your files aren’t compatible, you can encode them to one of the many supported formats before saving them to your drive.

4. Back up your social life

Another cool feature of the iXpand Drive app is that it allows users to back up their favorite photos from social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Picasa. Simply connect your social media accounts within the app and start the backup. You can watch as the iXpand Drive app saves each photo onto your drive. If you have many photos, you may want to wait until you have ample time to do the backup. Of course, you can cancel anytime.

5. Choose the right memory storage to fit your lifestyle

Before purchasing any flash drive for backup, you ought to carefully consider your usage habits and the types of media you hope to store. Selecting the proper memory size for your mobile lifestyle will prove invaluable when you’re out on the road. If you just need a backup for a phone with minimal contents or just want to store a few videos, the 16GB model could do. However, if you plan on shooting long videos and require an all-purpose flash drive to rely on, you might want to consider the models that offer more storage.

For reference, the 32GB model can hold 1,800 photos (10MP) and 80 minutes of video (1080p AVCHD) with 2,000 songs (MP3) and 8GB of files. The 128GB model can hold 7,200 photos, 320 minutes of video, 8,000 songs and 32GB of files. (Source: Amazon)
